Beecher Flanagan (born DD MMM YYYY) is an Alumnus of Epsilon Chapter (Ε 2) at Vanderbilt University and Founder of Tau Chapter (Τ 12) at East Carolina University. Dr. Flanagan passed away on April 7, 1951 after suffering from a heart attack.

Fraternity Life and Career

While Flanagan was working on completing the PhD requirements at George Peabody, he became a founding member/founder of the Epsilon Chapter in 1928. Not much history remains of his involvement and role with the Chapter. Flanagan started teaching history at East Carolina Teachers College in 1925, but it would not be until 1935 when a group of students approached Dr. Flanagan about forming a social/service fraternity at ECTC, which would become Tau Sigma Sigma. The following year, he was able to convince the group to seek affiliation with Phi Sigma Pi. They became Tau Chapter. Dr. Flanagan served as the Advisor for both Tau Sigma Sigma and Tau Chapter and would eventually serve as a National Officer of Phi Sigma Pi.

After graduating from high school in Chickamauga, Georgia, Flanagan taught for three years in Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Flanagan was the head of the mathematics department of Middlesboro High School in Kentucky, principal of the Ramer school in Tennessee, and principal of the Shady Dale school in Georgia. Flanagan completed most of his undergraduate work at Berea College in Georgia where he obtained his B.Ped degree. While a student of Berea, Flanagan taught math and science at the Vanceburg, Kentucky summer normal school. Following, he went to George Peabody, now known as Vanderbilt University where he holds a B.S.(1924), M.A. (1924), and a PhD (1934). Flanagan also headed the Mathematics Department of Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee from 1924-25. In the fall of 1925, Flanagan started teaching history at East Carolina Teachers College, now known as East Carolina University. In 1930, Flanagan began teaching economics at ECTC and held that role until his death in 1951.
