Brother At Large
About the Brother At Large
The Brother At Large is a common Chapter position not required by the National Constitution. This Brother (or group of Brothers) serves in an ombudsman role within the chapter. Their responsibilities might include:
- Act as a mediator for any disputes that may arise between Brothers
- Respect the confidence of all Brothers and maintain neutrality in all matters relating to their position
- Shall not serve in any other elected positions during their time in office to maintain neutrality
- Serve as a liaison between the executive board and individual Brothers. May or may not be a voting member of the executive board
Chapters with Brother At Large: Alpha, Epsilon, Alpha Beta, Alpha Iota, Alpha Lambda, Alpha Sigma, Beta Delta (refers to these officers as 'Chaplains'), Beta Epsilon, Beta Lambda, Beta Mu, Gamma Phi, Gamma Rho, Gamma Zeta, Delta Alpha, Delta Kappa, Delta Mu, Delta Tau, Delta Chi, Epsilon Eta, Epsilon Xi, Epsilon Rho, Zeta Delta
Other Optional Responsibilities
The Brother As Large is likely the most common current Chapter officer or position that whose role is neither partially nor completely defined by the National Constitution. As such, many Chapters have adapted this role to suit their own needs, including responsibilities such as:
- Tabulating votes when collected by secret ballot
- Election or appointment of both a male and female Brother At Large, to further ensure that individual Brothers have an outlet to discuss any personal issues they encounter.
- Be responsible for managing or measuring Chapter morale, including performing the following functions:
- Collect during Chapter meetings, and read aloud following, anonymous notes from Chapter members.
- Schedule and/or host impromptu dinners or gatherings to informally discuss Chapter issues.
- Collect recommendations from the Brotherhood and deliver them to the committee chairs/executive board for consideration.
- Liaise between the Chapter's leadership and individual Brothers on sensitive issues such as collection of dues or attendance requirements.
- Be elected only after a 'vote of no confidence', wherein a small percentage or fixed number of Brothers have the opportunity to reject the candidacy of another Brother for consideration to this position.
- Collect and distribute feedback from Brothers who submit comments via an anonymous, electronic feedback-collection system.
