Delta Sigma Risk Management Policy
Article I: Purpose
Although Phi Sigma Pi does not intend to dictate the personal ideals, morals, or beliefs of its members, the nature of the pledge of brotherhood taken when becoming a member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity expects each brother to possess a reasonable standard of personal conduct. The actions of several individuals—or even just one individual—can jeopardize our brotherhood, our initiates, our guests, and even the National Fraternity as a whole. Risk management is a procedure or plan implemented in order to reduce the occurrence of injury, damage, or financial loss. This policy is created with the understanding that the Delta Sigma Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity (hereafter referred to as "The Chapter") is composed of persons who are recognized as legal adults by the State of Colorado and consequently liable for their own actions under University of Colorado-Boulder policies, state law, and federal law.
Article II: Hazing
- The Chapter strictly prohibits hazing of prospective members in accordance with The National Constitution, Article XX, Section 1.
- Hazing shall be defined as, but not limited to, any action or situation created, intentionally, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, and ridicule.
- Actions and situations that may be considered hazing include, but are not limited to: paddling in any form, creation of excessive fatigue, physical and physiological shock, scavenger hunts which involve illegal activities, one-way road trips which leave an individual to find return transportation, wearing apparel at any time or location which is not appropriate, required engagement in public stunts or buffoonery, morally degrading games or humiliating activities, compulsory consumption of any alcoholic beverages or controlled substances or non-controlled substances, other activities which are not consistent with the regulations and policies of CU-Boulder.
- To report a possible hazing incident, contact a member of the Executive Board or the National Office. This chapter official shall then convene a trial board following to the procedures outlined in the Chapter Bylaws, Article IX, Section 5. In addition to any disciplinary actions imposed by The Chapter, members involved are also subject to any disciplinary actions of the National Council.
Article III: Alcohol and Controlled Substances
- The Chapter strictly prohibits the consumption of alcohol and/or the illicit use of controlled substances at any membership drive event. A membership drive event is interpreted as any rush or initiation event that is organized for or by the prospectives or initiates or requires their attendance for part or all of the time.
- The Chapter advocates responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages. If a member chooses to consume alcoholic beverages at any event, Chapter sponsored or otherwise, they shall not represent the Chapter or the Fraternity as a whole by wearing letters of any kind.
- The Chapter prohibits the illicit use of controlled substances at any event organized by The Chapter, function, or meeting, as set forth by the National Constitution Article XX, Section 4.
- Official chapter moneys shall not be used for the purchase of alcohol and/or controlled substances.
- To report a possible violation of this policy, contact the highest-ranking chapter official not involved in the incident. This chapter official shall then convene a trial board following to the procedures outlined in the Chapter Bylaws, Article IX, Section 5. In addition to any disciplinary actions imposed by The Chapter, members involved are also subject to the disciplinary actions of the National Council.
Article IV: Harassment
- The Chapter strictly prohibits all forms of harassment. Harassment is defined as any behavior that intimidates, threatens, or degrades an individual.
- Types of harassment include, but are not limited to: harassment based on race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disabled status, and is therefore prohibited.
- To report a possible harassment incident, contact a member of the Executive Board. This chapter official shall then convene a trial board, following to the procedures outlined in the Chapter Bylaws, Article IX, Section 5. In addition to any disciplinary actions imposed by The Chapter, members involved are also subject to the disciplinary actions of the National Council.
Article V: Emergency Protocol for a Phi Sigma Pi Function
- Any member present who is able, meaning in condition to calmly and correctly assess the situation, shall call all necessary services and/or emergency personnel (police, fire, ambulance, etc.).
- Gather all event attendees, namely brothers and their guests, together in one location.
- Record the names of everyone present.
- At the approval of the member who called emergency services and also of any emergency personnel present, event attendees are free to leave or stay at the event if the location has been secured by proper personnel.
- If Chapter President is not present, notify him/her within 24 hours of the situation.
- Call the National Office at 1-800-366-1916 as soon after the incident as possible to inform them of the situation.
- Do not speak to anyone regarding the incident with the exception of: emergency personnel, the chapter advisor, university officials, National Staff, or National Council members.
- It is at the discretion of the members involved what information the President discloses about the incident to The Chapter or any other persons, excluding the aforementioned personnel, officials, and Staff.
