Research Experience

  • Suneth Namal was a research engineer, Reseaux et Services Multimedia Mobiles research group , Telecom SudParis, France, He took part in the Celtic project "SERVERY" (Advance SERVice Architecture and Service DelivERY Environment - Celtic Gold award in 2012), Work package 2, (2009-2010). SERVERY Project
  • He was a research scientist at Center for Wireless Communication, University of Oulu, Finland. The work carried out was as a project member in "MEVICO" project (Mobile Networks Evolution for Individual Communications, Celtic Silver award in 2013) which falls under Celtic-Plus. MEVICO researched the network aspects of the 3GPP LTE-mobile broadband network for its evolution in the mid-term in 2011-2014. The goal was to contribute to the technical drive and leadership of the EPC network (3GPP), and thus support the European industry to maintain and extend its strong technical and market position in the mobile networks market. The results can be used as contributions for further development of the 3GPP standard on EPC in Rel11-Rel13. The scope of the project was mobile network evolution in the mid-term, whereas EU FP7 projects cover the Future Internet in the longer term. The project partners include,

  • Suneth Namal was the project manager and PCC representative for "SIGMONA" project (SDN Concept in Generalized Mobile Network Architectures, EU project under Celtic-Plus umbrella) on behalf of Centre for Wireless Communications, University of Oulu, Finland. Direct involvement in preparation of the project proposals were made at the beginning and role of task leader for "Mobility management" in work package-3 was undertaken.

Project description:The SIGMONA project, SDN Concept in Generalized Mobile Network Architectures, will study network architectures and functions for evolution of the LTE/EPC (3GPP) mobile networks. The main focus is on the network, although and end-to-end system approach, including the LTE radio system, will be taken. The project will apply the latest networking and computing technologies and architectures onto the LTE/EPC mobile network. The project aims at evaluation, specification and validation of a Software Defined Mobile Network concept designed onto the software defined networking (SDN), network virtualization and cloud computing principles. The project will provide an insight into the feasibility and opportunities of such network concepts, as well as evaluate the limits of performance and scalability of the new technologies applied on mobile broadband networks. New opportunities for traffic, resource and mobility management will be studied. New challenges on network security and solutions for those will be addressed. Network virtualization solutions in the mobile transport networks, as well as effects on the network monitoring and network management solutions are relevant, too. Use cases, such as content delivery will be considered. It is also foreseen that the investments on the network and operational costs would change, hence the project will also outline the impact onto cost of network, value chain and business models. The model of open interfaces, the role of standards and related bodies will also be described.
