Early Fraternity Life and Career

The Upsilon class of Alpha Sigma with Initiate Advisor Jet Aiken

At Mount Olive High School in Flanders, NJ, Kayla was the Editor-in-Chief of her school newspaper and was very involved in community service. After graduating, Kayla decided to attend Virginia Commonwealth University to study Mass Communication, though she later changed her major to English. Kayla found Phi Sigma Pi in the Spring of 2008 as a second semester Freshman, and liked its unique balance of service and social aspects. She brought her best friend Alisha Kellam to rush with her, and they became members of the Upsilon class that spring. While an Initiate, she served on the Upsilon class Service Committee with Phillip Vaughan. Though Kayla became very ill toward the end of her Initiate period, she managed to successfully complete all the requirements of Alpha Sigma's Initiate program, including the National Exam. On April 20, 2008, she and the rest of her class were inducted as Brothers.

After her induction, Kayla was elected Inter-Chapter Relations Chair for the Fall of 2008, where she helped organize a trip for several Alpha Sigma brothers to attend a Kickball Tournament at the Delta Chi chapter. In Spring of 2009, she helped to plan the Capitol Region Conference and represented her chapter in the Capitol Region as the Alpha Sigma Chapter Regional Delegate.

After a one semester term as ICR Chair, Kayla was elected the Initiate Advisor for Spring 2009. During her tenure as IA, she led an amazing class of 24 wonderful Initiates. As Initiates, the Chi class of Alpha Sigma had several successful Initiate events, including an International Coffee and Dessert hour, a trip to Belle Isle in Richmond, a Krispy Kreme fundraiser, and making sock puppets and dolls for terminally ill children. Chi Class was inducted on April 26, 2009, and remains the largest inducted in Alpha Sigma history.

After serving as Initiate Advisor, Kayla searched for different ways to serve Alpha Sigma, and decided to run for the Presidency. She was installed on April 26, 2009, and served a full year term as the Chapter President of Alpha Sigma. During her term as President, Alpha Sigma experienced a number of successes, including hosting Regional Conference for the first time in the chapter's history and many successful events due to the hard work of the wonderful chairs and officers of Alpha Sigma. Following her Presidency, Kayla was elected to the position of Parliamentarian of the Alpha Sigma Chapter. She was installed on April 25, 2010, and served for the duration of the 2010-2011 academic year. During her time as Parliamentarian, Kayla revamped the Alpha Sigma Chapter Bylaws and Chapter Operating Policy, passing 35 amendments over the course of the year.

Kayla was the recipient of her chapter's Tripod Award in the Spring of 2009, the Fall of 2009, and the Fall of 2010. She was also the recipient of the Chapter's Outstanding Laugh Award in Fall 2008, the Best Big Brother Award in both Fall 2008 and Spring 2011, the Leadership Award in the Spring 2010, and the Outstanding Senior Award in Spring 2011.

On May 1, 2011, Kayla, along with 22 other Alpha Sigma graduating seniors, attended her last meeting and became an Alpha Sigma Alumna. As a senior gift, she was given a membership in the National Alumni Association.
