List of Beta Upsilon Chapter Events

From PhiSigmaPiWiki

The following is a list of Beta Upsilon Chapter Events frequently organized by the chapter:

Educational Events

Etiquette Dinner

  • The Beta Upsilon Brothers attended their first etiquette dinner in Fall 2008. We were taught to learn how to eat and act properly over a four course meal prepared by students in the Hospitality and Tourism major.

Various Theater Performances

  • The educational committee often gets groups of brothers to attend local area performances on or around campus, such as the campus performance of the Vagina Monologues, or the Not Ready for Bedtime Players.

Brother Talents

  • Often times the best way to learn is from the teachings of a fellow brother. In the past, brothers have taught their own talents to the brotherhood, such as sushi-making, a discussion about OCD, a quick class on the basics of Google documents and Microsoft, and a basic nursing demonstration.

Service Events

Brothers Uriel Rodriguez and Christine Rega with Peg at the Arbor's

Arbor's Assistant Living Center

  • The Brothers regularly visit the elderly at Arbor's. In the past we have attended events such as a community dance and pumpkin painting with the residents. We also take part in card-making activities for the residents.

Food Drive

  • Each semester the brothers try to organize a food drive at a local Stop and Shop to collect food for the Amherst Survival Center. This event is always very successful thanks to the kind heart of the locals.

The Boston Marathon

  • In Spring 2010 ten Beta Upsilon brothers traveled to Boston, Massachusetts to help volunteer for the Boston Marathon. The brothers helped out with the registration for the annual 5K road race that is held on the Sunday before Marathon Monday.

Loose Change

  • Beta Upsilon helped to collect spare change from customers going in and out of a local Wal-Mart store in the Amherst area. The money was collected and compiled, and was then donated to the Suicide Hopeline, a suicide awareness hotline that helps teens who are struggling with thoughts of suicide.

Social Events

National Founder's/Valentine's Day Dinner

  • First organized in 2009, the dinner commemorates the founding of Phi Sigma Pi as a national organization, as well as celebrating Valentine's Day. Organized by both the Brother at Large and Historian in 2009, the dinner was held in the university dining hall's private room, and included a Secret Valentine gift swap.

Hockey Hockey Nights

  • During hockey season the brothers often go to the Mullins Center to cheer on the Minutemen.

Fundraising Events

Talent Show

  • In Spring 2008, Beta Upsilon held its first annual Talent Show in the Student Union Ballroom. The acts ranged from various student bands to a poetry reading and juggling. Brothers Louis Harris and Korey Mendes also preformed, Louis rapping and Korey preforming kendo.

Mullins Center Clean-Up

  • Every semester the Brothers go to the Mullins Center and get hired to clean up after events (i.e. hockey games, concerts, etc). This is our steadiest fundraiser that we do every year, even though it is not a favorite to do.

Brother Auction

  • The favorite fundraiser that the Beta Upsilon Brothers do every semester is the Brother Auction. One Brother offers a task up for bid (i.e. cooking dinner, cleaning rooms, sewing PSP pillows). The other Brothers then bid for what is being presented and highest bidding Brother wins. Many times half the money goes to Teach for America while the other half benefits the chapter.

Pizza Sale

  • In the fall of 2009 the brothers of Beta Upsilon helped to sell pizza and dessert products from a local company, placing orders and then delivering the goods. This was one of the most successful fundraising events to date.

TFA Events

TFA Bake Sale

Bake Sale

  • At various points in the semester the TFA Committee will often make cookies or cupcakes to bring to chapter. Brothers will usually pay $1 for a cupcake to donate to TFA.

Road Race

  • Started in the spring of 2008, the TFA 5K road race is now an annual event of this chapter.

Backpacks

  • Each semester the TFA committee tries to compile backpacks to be sent out to benefit Teach for America. The brothers help to organize and collect school supplies and pack them into backpacks to be sent out.

Intramural Sports

Volleyball Team

  • In spring 2009 Beta Upsilon made a co-ed intramural volleyball team that will hopefully continue to be a semesterly occurrence.

Softball Team

  • Spring 2010 saw the creation of a Beta Upsilon intramural softball team.
