Elite Pirates

Award

First awarded in 2006, the ECU Elite Pirate program is a premiere recognition program designed to honor the top student leaders at East Carolina University while making a positive change in the ECU community. The purpose of this advanced leadership program is to provide students that have extensive leadership experience with the necessary tools in order to recognize how to engage in the leadership process to create positive sustainable change for the ECU community. Elite Pirates are Leadership Ambassadors for Student Affairs, the Center for Student Leadership & Engagement, and East Carolina University. The Elite Pirates are also charged with representing ECU at city functions by working closely with the Greenville City Council. Only 11 students are eligible to receive this award each academic year.

Alumni Association Awards

Thomas Jordan Jarvis Medal

Award

First awarded in 2002, the Thomas Jordan Jarvis Medal is designed to be the most prestigious award ECU may bestow on an individual. This award is given to those that have demonstrated extraordinary service to ECU and/or society. The namesake of the award is considered the father of East Carolina University.

Distinguished Service Award

Award

First awarded in 1982, the Distinguished Service Award recognizes uncommon and outstanding service to the Alumni Association and/or the University as a whole. A maximum of three award recipients may be given each year.

Outstanding Alumni Award

Award

First awarded in 1940, the Outstanding Alumni Award recognizes alumni with a minimum of five years of work history, outstanding and uncommon achievement in one’s profession, in civic affairs, and/or politics. Recipients are recognized to serve as role models for students and other Alumni. Before 1983, there was only one recipient per year (if any) and since 1983 a maximum of four awards may be given each year.

Honorary Alumni Awards

Award

First awarded in 1988, Honorary Alumni status is an honor extended to individuals who did not attend ECU but have adopted the University as their own through uncommon and outstanding service, substantial and continuing commitment, and loyalty. Prior to 2002, multiple awards were granted per year. A maximum of two awards may be given each year.

Honorary Doctorates

Award

First awarded in 1983, the honorary doctorates were given to recognize the outstanding efforts by both Chancellor Leo W. Jenkins and Senator Robert B. Morgan in establishing the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, as well as their efforts to the general advancement and expansion of East Carolina University.

Robert H. Wright Alumni Leadership Award

Award

First awarded in 1984, the Robert H. Wright Alumni Leadership Award is designed to be the most prestigious award presented to seniors during annual commencement exercises. The award is to recognize academic achievement at East Carolina, service to both the University and the community, and leadership qualities and potential. A maximum of five awards may be given each year.

Award
