Fall 2011

Founder's Weekend

Events are to be announced.

Rush

  • This semester (Fall 2011) we set up a table at the annual Club Fair. There was tons of interest in the fraternity and it showed in our open rush events.
  • Open Rush
    • Cook out: Initiates and Brothers went to the local park and enjoyed hotdogs and other side dishes while getting to know the possible initiates.
    • Kickball: A friendly game of kickball was played on Moffett Lawn. Teams were a mix of current brothers and rushees.
    • Game Night: Several rounds of Capitalism ended in a night of lots of laughs and stiff competition.
  • Closed Rush:
    • Photo Scavenger Hunt: Several groups of brothers and rushees travelled around the Radford area performing and taking pictures of various tasks, from handstands to finding a picture of the President of Radford University. The winning group's rushees won gift cards to Starbucks and lots of praise. The fun times can be seen in the pictures.
    • BTO's: A trip to the local frozen yogurt joint included several conversations between brothers and rushees. It was a great bonding experience.
    • Round Robin: It is simply Q&A with the brothers.

Social

  • Soccer Game: In support of two of our brothers, members of the brotherhood attended a soccer game and cheered on the team in their game against Elon on September 24th.
  • Pumpkin Patch: The Alpha Xi Chapter went to Sinkland Farms on the 23rd of October. Events included going to the pumpkin patch, hay rides, enjoying food and drink, and a day of brother bonding. The group returned in time for the chapter meeting later in the day.

Fundraising

  • Virginia Tech Games: Raising $7 per hour per person, the Alpha Xi chapter has raised hundreds of dollars in the past few weeks by helping the VT crew scan tickets and usher the audience to their seats.

Awards and Scholarship

  • Family Jeopardy: The A&S committee created four jeopardy games to play in the month of September. Teams competed by answering questions about the Chapter families, initiate classes, the National Council, and various other subjects.
  • Highlander Festival: Every year the City of Radford puts on a Highlander Festival celebrating the culture with games, dances, and merchandise. As an A&S event, members of the chapter walked around learning about the Highlanders.
  • RU Scared: The Residence Hall Association put on an event called RU Scared and Phi Sigma Pi had a table there. We painted children's faces, had the little ones play ghost bowling and give out candy with an attached fact or joke about Halloween. The event took place on October 30th 2011 and about 100 children attended.

Risk Management

  • Financial Literacy: Ultimate Money Skills – College: Members attended a presentation about the importance of managing ones money, paying for student loans, investing money, and budgeting.
  • Voting on Initiates: The brotherhood talked about what acceptable points of debate are, as well as what we should focus on when making our individual decision to pass, not pass, or abstain when voting.

Service

  • Clothing Bank: Members of the Alpha Xi Chapter volunteered two hours of their day helping the local clothing bank organize their clothes, and assisting customers while some brothers paid a few dollars to shop at the clothing bank.

Initiate

  • Social: The initiates put on a Halloween themed party where brothers could get their face painted, eat various treats, like caramel apples and dirt pudding, and play games. The event was planned and put into action in 8 days, just in time for, our Region Consultant, Christopher A. Crout's visit.
  • Fundraising: The initiates sold Hot Dogs and Hot Chocolate for a dollar each on October 27th 2010. Over $100 was raised, all of which went to Teach For America.
  • Fundraising: The initiates are putting on another fundraising event: Phi Sigma Pi Dodgeball. All students are welcome to make a team and play against Brothers and Radford University students. All proceeds go to Teach For America and the winning team will receive a $30 cash prize.
