  • Rationale: The overall proposed changes are made with revisions to the Awards, Scholarships, and Emblems Manual.
  • What is the motion to be made on this? I move to accept the revisions to the Awards, Scholarships, and Emblems Manual.

National Awards

National Awards will be presented during the annual National Convention. The National Awards shall be divided into three tiers of recognition: The Purple and Gold Awards, Excellence and Founders' Awards, and Torchia Award(s). The National Awards and guidelines are as follows:

Purple and Gold Awards

Recipient nominations of Purple and Gold Awards will be selected by members of the National Staff. Purple and Gold Awards will be based on metrics set within the Ideal Phi Sigma Pi Chapter guidelines. Purple and Gold Awards may be awarded to multiple chapters/members that meet the award qualifications unless otherwise noted within the award description.

The Purple and Gold Awards will be:

The Brother John Finnegan Award for Most Conventions Attended is given to the Brother(s) at Convention who has attended the most National Conventions. At the 2008 National Convention the award was named after John Finnegan who was retired as a recipient. The 2008 Convention was his 20th. He had won every year since the inception of this award. Brothers will be “retired” to receive this award after attending 20 National Conventions.

The Outstanding Regional Conference Award is given out to recognize the top regional conference. The host chapter of the conference will accept the award on behalf of the region. This award was renamed from the former Outstanding Regional Event Award in 2011.

The Outstanding Chapter Advising Award recognizes the best nominated Chapter Alumni Advisor, Faculty/Staff Advisor, or Alumni Advisory Board Member.

The Outstanding Achievement in Fundraising Award recognizes chapters meeting the following fundraising goals:

  • 90% Chapter attendance/ participation
  • Demonstrates inter-committee collaboration
  • Incorporates risk management
  • Donates at least 5% of money raised specifically for chapter’s use to either
  • Subrosa Fund, Todd Tripod Scholarship, Rolla F. Wood Graduate Scholarship or unrestricted funds.

The Outstanding Achievement in Recruitment and Initiation Award recognizes chapters meeting the following recruitment and initiation goals:

  • 90% chapter attendance at informational meetings, Pinning, and Induction
  • Demonstrates inter-committee collaboration
  • Incorporates risk management, including a presentation to the initiates
  • Recruits at least 5% of all eligible prospective new members at the university
  • Retains 85% of initiate class (Pinning to Induction)
  • Plans and executes a diverse schedule of recruitment/initiation events
  • Performs The Ritual and ceremonies

The Outstanding Achievement in Risk Management Award recognizes chapters that meet the following Risk Management goals:

  • 90% Chapter attendance at Risk Management event(s)
  • Demonstrates inter-committee utilization
  • Incorporates risk management within chapter activities
  • Has a written and functioning Risk Management policy that has been reviewed and approved by the chapter’s Region Consultant

Recipient nominations of Excellence and Founders' Awards will be selected by members of the National Staff with award winners being selected by the National Awards Committee. Excellence and Founders' Awards may be awarded to one chapter from within the nomination pool.

The Excellence and Founders' Awards will be:

The C.H. McClure Single Service Award is presented to a collegiate chapter for an outstanding national philanthropy service project. Each chapter may choose an exemplary service project that it has successfully completed during the past year and write a detailed summary of the project to be included with the spring Chapter End-of-Semester/Quarter Report (Form 110).

The Charles W. Chance Alumni Award is presented to the chapter that excels in alumni relations based upon such areas as sound communication, financial support, and alumni participation in chapter events.

The Sanders P. McComsey Most Improved Old Chapter Award and the Clarence O. Williams Most Improved New Chapter Award are presented to the chapters that have demonstrated the most overall improvement from the preceding year. A new chapter is defined as a chapter that has been active up to and including four (4) National Fraternity fiscal years. An old chapter is defined as a chapter that has been active for five (5) or more National Fraternity fiscal years (i.e., A chapter inducted in Fall 2008 or Spring 2009 is a new chapter through the 2013-2014 fiscal year).

The Steven A. DiGuiseppe Administrative Award is presented to the collegiate chapter(s) that maintains the highest efficiency in administrative detail. Criteria for evaluation includes the manner in which the chapter conducts its communication with the National Headquarters as well as with officials of the college or university where the chapter has been chartered, and whether or not the chapter exhibits consistency in carrying out its administrative affairs.

The Jeffrey L. Johnson National Fellowship Award has been established so that chapters and individuals that have exhibited outstanding examples of fellowship towards and with other chapters may be recognized and honored. Chapters and individuals may only be nominated by the official vote and recognition of their fellow chapters and/or National Council. Though up to two awards may be given each year, an award does not have to be bestowed every year. By this means, the National Council and the nominating chapters are charged with honoring only the most deserving.

The Dr. Eldo L. Hendricks Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Programming has been established to recognize chapters that have provided exceptional education, cultural and leadership programs benefiting their Members and the community in which they live. Up to three awards may be given each year, but an award does not have to be presented every year.

The Claude A. Phillips Award is presented to a collegiate chapter for an outstanding fellowship event. Each chapter may choose an exemplary fellowship event that they have successfully completed during the past year and write a detailed summary of the project to be included with the spring Chapter End-of-Semester/Quarter Report (Form 110).

The Most Outstanding Alumni Chapter is presented to Alumni Chapters to recognize overall achievements in their promotion of fellowship, leadership, and scholarship in their activities. Each Chapter may submit a nomination to highlight its involvement in maintaining scholarship, leadership and fellowship involvement

Torchia Award(s)

Recipient nominations of Torchia Award(s) will be selected by members of the National Staff. Torchia Award(s) winners will be slated by the National Awards Committee and ratified by an unanimous vote of the National Council. Torchia Awards may be awarded to no more than three chapters. Both undergraduaute and alumni chapters are eligible for Torchia Award(s).

The Joseph Torchia Outstanding Chapter Award is the first, oldest, and most prestigious of the National Awards. Chapters are evaluated for this award on the basis of overall chapter activities as they strive to achieve a balance of scholarship, leadership and fellowship.
