Regions are geographical groupings of chapters. All active chapters are assigned to a region. The region system was originally created in 2001 under 2000-2002 Vice President of Chapter Development Mike Noll; since that time, region assignments have been modified as new chapters have been activated in order to maintain a balanced setup.

The Original Regions
The Regions were first created in 2001 under the 39th Empowered Council. It was formally announced at the 2001 Grand Chapter Conference at Ohio State University. The idea was for the internal regional strength to benefit the National Organization. 12 Regions were created with approximately 8-9 chapters per region. Four Chapter Consultants (the position title would eventually become Region Consultant) were assigned 3 regions a piece for support.
The Make up of the original regions was quite different from what they are today. The make up of the regions were much more spread out, with many chapters spanning across several states. Initiatives were subsequently launched to strengthen Regional relations such as setting up Regional conferences, building regional event promotion and the creation of the Buddy Chapter Program.

At the 2010 National Convention, Phi Sigma Pi formally introduced the first wide-scale regional realignment since the inception of the fraternity regions. New Regions
As time has passed, regions continue to expand at a pheonomenal rate. Thanks to the efforts of Director of Expansion Ryan DeGuzman, the Pacific Coast Region was created due to the stunning growth in the number of chapters in the state of California. Formerly a member of the Southwest Region, the Pacific Coast Region was introduced at the 2011 National Convention.
During the summer of 2013, the Upper Midwest Region was split into two Regions, introducing the new Eastern Midwest Region, due to a number of new Chapters. The Pacific Coast Region was split during the summer of 2014 due to a number of new Chapters as well. The Northern Pacific Coast Region and Southern Pacific Coast Region was established and announced at the 2014 National Convention, bringing us up to 21 Regions.
Regional Conferences
Regions are required to hold a Regional Conference every year. Regional Conferences serve a variety of purposes. Some of the benefits of the conferences include:
- Developing relationships with Brothers from other nearby chapters
- Building personal leadership skills
- Exchanging ideas between chapters for attendees to take back to their own chapter
Region Consultants
Prior to the formal establishment of the regions, Chapter Consultants had been assigned chapters much in the same way Region Consultants are assigned to collegiate chapters today. Since the inception of our current system however, each Region is assigned a Region Consultant, who is a member of the National Staff. Region Consultants provide advice and work with chapters to grow and develop, and provide a direct communication channel with the National Office.

Awards
The most outstanding chapter in each Region is honored each year at National Convention. This award recognizes those chapters who are leaders within each region. Those chapters that receive the Top in Region Award are eligible to receive the Joseph Torchia Outstanding Chapter Award
