He was a graduate of East Carolina University and earned a teaching degree specializing in Science and Social Science. While in school, Wesley was also the vice-president of the Men's Student Government Association and chairman of the Chapel Program Committee. After teaching for a year, he went on to receive a master's degree in Chemical Engineering from Mercer University. He retired from the U.S. government as a chemist and missile specialist.
