Early Fraternity Life and Career
Mike decided to go to IUP originally because he wanted to pursue a music degree. Shortly after his first semester, he wanted to do something with a greater chance of finding a job immediately after school. Mike switched to MIS shortly thereafter on advice from his girlfriend at the time.
During his sophomore year, after Mike and said girlfriend broke up, Mike decided he needed to find a group to spend his time with, since his social circle had been halved.
Mike received a letter in the mail advertising Phi Sigma Pi Rush and thought it sounded like an interesting group. When he went to the informational meeting outside the HUB he was sold.
Mike was inducted into the Alpha Beta (Gladiators) class in the Fish family.
Collegiate Years at Eta Chapter
After Mike was inducted as a brother, he helped with the fund raising committee for two semesters with his grandbig, Lee Zarnick and Kelly Lange. While on the fund raising committee, the fraternity ran a very successful homecoming shirt sale.
When Mike was a junior, he became the chapter's historian.
For Spring '04, Mike was elected to be an Initiate Advisor along with Andrea Barner. The two of them, along with Laura Huss traveled to the '03 National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mike and Andrea (and later Bethany Williams) initiated a 20 member class, effectively doubling the active brotherhood.
Alumni Years to Present
Mike graduated in Spring 2004 with a Bachelors of Science in Management Information Systems. Mike briefly worked for the Defense Supply Center in Philadelphia. He then worked as a New Media Programmer for AccuWeather.com in State College, PA. Mike worked as a Web Applications Developer for INRange Systems, a telepharmacy company located in Altoona, PA from 2006-2010. Mike joined the Center for Sustainability at The Pennsylvania State University as their Web Technology Manager in November of 2010.
Mike married his girlfriend of 3 years on November 1, 2008. They live in Altoona, PA with their two cats, Annabelle and Vonnegut. They had their first son, Ari, in July of 2010.
National Involvement
- National Convention 2003
Bigs and Littles
Mike's Big Brother is Grace (Bielchick) Shellenbarger , who is studying for her PHD at IUP. She taught Mike a lot about the National Fraternity and many other lessons, perhaps the most important of which is that it is ok to go against what everyone else is doing-- you don't always have to follow the crowd to fit in. And that camo is actually a color.
Mike has 1 Little Brother:
- Anna Baughman, Alumnus
Anna is currently pursing her Master's Degree in Mathematics at IUP
Mike also has one twin, Jason Gruber
