Advertising 101

Advertising for your conference

Advertising your regional event is essential. Beyond having each Regional Committee Delegate announce updates at meetings, all avenues of advertising should be explored – but keep in mind, advertising for regional events takes on a much narrower scope then advertising for rush on your campus. Why? Because you are basically looking at "long distance" or multiple chapter advertising. You are also "selling" a specific event, rather then trying to make your chapter appealing to an entire campus. While your target audience is small and very specific, getting everyone on the same page from an advertising standpoint is probably the biggest challenge. Below are some tips on getting a maximum number of Brothers to your regional event.

Plan of Action

  • Select a theme, mascot, or logo for the event. Use this as part of your advertising materials, so that it’s recognizable as being representative of your event.
  • Request VIPS. While every Brother is a very important person, let's face it, it is critical to get e-board members on board so they can drive your advertising message with their chapters.
  • If your only advertising plan is to have the Regional Delegate "ask around", then your turnout will be poor. Get an official registration form online with a great website to boot. Most people are visual so this will help draw them in. Be sure to include FAQs on the weekend complete with housing information.
  • Create a Facebook event or use evites. This is a simple way that Brothers can be creative and have some fun. It also lets you track RSVPs and lets Brothers interact back and forth which will hype the weekend and build the excitement.
  • Mail a registration packet to each chapter. Believe it or not, sometimes snail mail does have a purpose!
  • If sign-ups are slow, deluge chapters with advertising, and have the Regional Delegates go into extreme campaigning mode. Step up emphasizing to everyone that the regional event will be the place to be that weekend, and keep releasing details of the events that will be going on that weekend, as well as fun facts about the events of the weekend, the host chapter/school or the regional event’s past. If it’s the first regional event, use the appeal of being a part of Phi Sigma Pi history to draw people in. Make sure everyone involved in the planning is excited, and you’ll get other chapters excited, too!
