Alpha Sigma Chapter (Founded xx Month xxxx) is located at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. The chapter was founded by Chapter alumnus Name and is a member of the Capitol Region.

Chapter History

Founding

In the spring of 1997, an Alpha Kappa alum, Rebecca "Becky" Halloran moved to Richmond and found that there had once been a chapter at Virginia Commonwealth University that had been inactive for about four years. The more she thought about it the more it made sense to reactivate the chapter.

Re-Activation

Getting Alpha Sigma re-started was a little more difficult than Rebecca had expected. Not being a VCU student or employee, getting lists of eligible potential brothers was difficult and even once a list of all students with a 3.0 gpa were obtained the graduate students, 1st semester freshman, 2nd semester seniors, and special students had to be weeded out.

On March 23, 1998, the first of several organizational meetings was held in the University Commons Theatre. On March 30, 1998, the first group of officers for the reactivated Alpha Sigma was elected and the elections were like pulling teeth, since many were unsure of what they were getting into with the fraternity, much less jumping right into a leadership position.

Finally on April 20, the charter class of the reactivated Alpha Sigma was inducted after taking the membership exam. The induction ceremony was the first official ceremony for the new Alpha Sigma. Betsy, Rebecca and several visiting brothers from Alpha Kappa performed the induction ceremony for the charter class of 33 new Brothers and welcomed them to the Phi Sigma Pi circle of Brotherhood with the fraternity grip, greeting, and song. And from that moment on the rest is Alpha Sigma History!

The Active Chapter

The Chapter currently has 27 Brothers, which are all very active in Phi Sigma Pi and other campus organizations from athletics to honor societies to service groups.

Chapter Symbols

The Chapter colors are purple, gold, white and black.

The Chapter mascot is a frog.

The Chapter's 2007-2008 Rush slogan is: My Fraternity Has GIRLS Too!

Chapter Chant

At the beginning of every meeting the entire Chapter stands to sing Brothers Are We and yell...

   A-S that's us,
We leave the rest back in the dust!
A-S that's why we dominate Phi Sigma Pi,
A-S it's true, we lead the pack at VCU,
And if you can't respect that-
You can kiss our A-S-S, Biatch!

Executive Board

Alpha Sigma currently has a nine position executive board, which meet every week before regular business and initiate meetings. Officers are elected each spring to serve the fraternity during the following academic year. In 2006, due to the dwindling size of the Chapter and need to re-energize the recruitment process the Chapter split the Recruitment Advisor office into a co-chair position.
