Removing Spam Content

This is a meta page with instructions on how to remove bot spam on this wiki. You will need to have admin rights on the wiki. An easy way to check is if you see a delete button at the top of this page near the edit button.

Instructions;

1. Click [Recent changes] in the left sidebar
2. At the top of the recent changes page select show last 500 changes
3. You are looking for a few give aways that new content is likely spam;
   1. an N in front of the title of the page means this is a new page, not an edit. Almost all the spam we get are new pages, though not all new pages are spam so be careful
   2. most spam is being added to a user page so the link to the page title will look like N User:Name
   3. next look for a very long description at the end of each line. It will start (Created page with "....) and will contain words but they will have nothing to do with the Fraternity
4. When you see a page you think is spam do two things;
   1. right click and open the page link, this is often the link that looks like N User:Name. Be Careful Here the page likely has some paragraphs of text that is legible but has nothing to do with the Fraternity. It often has some external links at the bottom. DO NOT CLICK THESE they likely will infect your computer. Instead at the top of the page click the Delete button. Set the reason to Vandalism. Leave the other options alone and click delete. Close the page.
   2. right click and open the link that says block after the author's name. Set expiry to Indefinite. Set reason to Spamming links to external sites. Leave the other options alone and click Block this User. Close the page.

We often get these bots setting up accounts but not making new pages. Since we can't confirm they are spam leave those new user accounts alone. They don't create any problems yet. The new pages are often set up late in the evening in order to get crawled by search engine robots, knowing they will be deleted during the day. They often will not come back until late at night so you don't need to check multiple times a day.
