Beta Upsilon 2008 Chapter History

From PhiSigmaPiWiki

The following is an overview of the 2008 Beta Upsilon Chapter History

Spring 2008

Spring 2008 would see many seniors leaving the chapter, as well as the induction of the final single letter initiate class of the Beta Upsilon chapter.

First Annual TFA 5K Race

In the spring, the brothers put together the first annual TFA 5K road race at the University of Massachusetts campus. Brothers and initiates together worked hard to make this a successful event.

Rush and Initiation

This semester marked new changes for the Initiation process. For one thing, this was the chapter's first semester having a Rush Advisor, brother Lacey Walker. Perhaps because of this addition, the chapter received many prospectives and the Omega class was one of the largest initiate classes. Initiate Advisor Christine Rega worked to improve the initiate program and created the first Initiate/Brother Retreat. Furthermore, Christine Rega worked on the initiate interview process by having them contact brothers from other chapters within the Northeast Region as well as outside our region for interviews. Also, the Induction ceremony was revamped due to the work of the Initiate Advisor.

Talent Show

Round Robin

This event featured brothers going around to different apartments in the Puffton area where a different drink was featured in each residence, and brothers wore white t-shirts and left messages to each other using magic markers.

National Convention 2008

Brothers Christine Rega and Jamie Bergstein were chosen from the chapter to attend the National Convention in Nashville, TN as National Council delegates.

Fall 2008

The chapter took on a new face after the exciting changes brought during the spring. In the spring, the Beta Upsilon chapter inducted sixteen brothers into the Omega class while at the same time over twenty active brothers who had helped the chapter to grow tremendously in the past few years graduated from UMass.

New E-Board

In the spring, the Beta Upsilon E-Board was mainly made up of graduating brothers holding all positions except for Historian and Initiate Advisor. After the graduation in the spring, the chapter was faced with a completely new e-board headed by Chapter President Christine Rega, and made up almost entirely of the Chi class, and Ginny Nielsen of the Psi class. This new change would bring much growth and a new direction for the chapter.

Alpha Alpha Pledge Class

The fall semester for Beta Upsilon would see the induction of thirteen new brothers in the Alpha Alpha class, one of the largest pledge classes in many years for the fall semester.

Lehigh Kickball

In the fall, brothers Ashley Kumlin, Korey Mendes, and Uriel Rodriguez traveled to Lehigh University in Pennsylvania for their annual ICR kickball event.

UDance

The brothers of Beta Upsilon made another appearance at the University of Massachusetts' UDance, a 15 hour dance marathon to benefit the Children's Miracle Network and the Baystate Children's Hospital in Springfield, MA. The brothers showed their support by doning their team color of green and dancing the night away.

New E-Board Position and Changes

At the end of the semester the brothers passed a motion to create the Brother at Large position at Beta Upsilon. A different motion was passed that set the term of the Rush Advisor and the Initiate Advisor to one semester. Also in 2008, E-Board positions were changed to be based on the calender year and not the academic calender. At the end of the fall semester, a very heated E-Board voting took place and lasted over four hours. The new E-Board would be made up entirely of Chi and Omega brothers, and saw a change in power for all positions except for President and Secretary.
