Catching the worm

The Early Bird Catches the Worm

Recruitment is key to your chapter’s survival – and the Golden Rule concerning recruitment is this - the early bird catches the worm! The end of the semester can be a crunch time for many students, but do not drop the ball in preparing for next semester's/quarter's rush.

Imagine this scenario – you have planned the perfect rush schedule at your first committee meeting, with tripod events balanced throughout the week, all the brothers are excited about participating, the school even has the mailing labels ready to go on your photocopies – which turned out beautifully, and they’ll be in the mail tomorrow. Now, to book the rooms you specified on all those copies – oh no! They all got booked at the end of last semester and not by you!

To be as blunt as possible, successful chapters always plan ahead - especially concerning the most time consuming event of the semester/quarter - rush. Don't get left empty handed because recruitment plans were not laid out in advance.

Tips of the Trade

What would a college student’s life be without procrastination? While procrastination may not hurt you in some areas, you can bet it will with recruitment. If you are waiting until the beginning of the semester/quarter to plan for recruitment, you are seriously behind the eight ball.

Things you can do before the semester/quarter ends:

  • Outline the calendar – What are the rush dates? When do you need space reserved? When do you need the letters out? When will pinning be?
  • Reserve rooms on campus – You need them for info nights and other events – once you get the dates set, get rooms ASAP! Get rooms for any ceremonies you need too! At some schools, you can only reserve rooms during the semester/quarter that you will use them. You can still be prepared, however. Find out the date you can apply and be there that day bright and early to reserve your rooms - same strategy with mailing labels! Information provided by: Phi Sigma Pi National Headquarters

  • Plan the itinerary – What sort of events will you be having? How many info nights? How many rushes? Remember, you need to have at least two info nights. Once you’ve got those taken care of, what needs to be done for them?
  • Delegate – Who will be responsible for food/speaking/decorations/PowerPoints, etc? Make sure they know their tasks so they can start early, too!
