Kayla Newberg decided to attend Virginia Commonwealth University in the fall of 2007 after graduating from Mount Olive High School in Flanders, New Jersey. Kayla was looking for an organization that would allow her to connect with other people while at the same time helping the community. She found Phi Sigma Pi through their table and brought her best friend Alisha Kellam to rush with her.
