Matthew rushed Phi Sigma Pi in the Spring of 2003 at the urging of his friend, and did at the earliest possible chance he had. He was not a good initiate, barely showing up to events and barely getting his journals done. However, once a brother, he started coming around and became deeply involved, being elected Initiate Advisor and selected as Most Improved Brother after less than a semester as a brother.

Manny rushed Phi Sigma Pi in the Spring of 1997 after receiving a recruitment letter from the fledgling chapter.  The chapter had failed to recruit a pledge class for several semesters and was on probation with the national organization.

He was Initiate Advisor for the Omicron and Pi classes. After his term, he volunteered to be a replacement Interchapter Relations Chair after the current chair resigned. As chair, he led a unprecedented marketing campaign to encourage people to attend [[GET SLAM'D]], involving traveling to many chapters and an email advertising campaign that has be copied many times since. Because of this, the GET SLAM'D of Spring 2005 was the largest and most successful in the event's history to that time.

Manny’s first leadership role was as Awards, Alumni and Scholarship Chair.  Very little structure existed in the chapter and Manny set to sorting out what Alumni base could be useful to the chapter, reaching out fruitlessly to graduated and inactive brothers. As rush for the Beta Class began, Manny recruited like-minded individuals, forming an initiate class that outnumbered the active brotherhood. He began campaigning informally and then formally on a platform of creating a vibrant brotherhood in what was then not much more than an Honor Society. He was elected President largely by the Beta Pledge Class and a handful of Alpha and Charter brothers who shared his vision ans would help serve as the « Dream Team » for building the chapter into what it is today. Many of the foundational programs of the Chapter: GETSLAM’D, Pledge Program, Black Committee, and Dance Marathon  came about under his leadership. Much of the credit for creating a powerful sense of fraternity came from what he learned and borrowed from AKPsi’s very successful Alpha Phi chapter. The Chapter won the Clarence Williams Most Improved Chapter Award as a result of his leadership. Following His Presidency, Manny held some honorary roles as Master of Ritual and defacto head of the Black Committee until his graduation.

That same semester, he was elected President of the Chapter for the next academic year. He ran on a platform of focusing on what was best for the chapter, and forgetting the wants of the national office. His tenure as President was widely seen as an entirely mediocre experience for all involved.
