Marcus Hosteen (born October 28) is an Active Collegiate Member of the Delta Iota Chapter of Phi Sigma Phi National Honor Fraternity at New Mexico State University [1].

Early Fraternity Life and Career

Marcus Hosteen was born in Cortez, Colorado but grew up in Shiprock, New Mexcio. He attended Shiprock High School and graduated on May 22, 2010 at the top of his class and Valedictorian with a 4.2 GPA. During his time at Shiprock High School Marcus was elected to Student Council where he served as the Student Council Treasurer then a Representative before being elected Student Body Vice President in May 2007. However over the summer the student who had been elected President passed away and Marcus assumed the Presidency which he served for an unprecedented three terms (2007-2010). Marcus worked at the Office of Navajo Nation Scholaship and Financial Assistance where he made the decision to attend New Mexico State University and upon graduation he received the Chief Manueltio Scholarship from the Navajo Nation.

He came to New Mexico State University because of scholarship money and it was the furthest he could get away from home while still remaining in the state of New Mexico. For his first year Marcus focused mostly on his classes but by his second year become involved in a lot of student organizations. It was during this time that Marcus first heard of Phi Sigma Pi and after meeting with Cynthia Mondragon, the Recruitment Advisor she convinced him to give the Fraternity a chance. Marcus' Big Brother during his initiate process was Travis D. Gee. Marcus successfully completed the Initiation Process was inducted into the Fraternity in Fall 2011.

Collegiate Years at the Delta Iota Chapter

During his time as an undergraduate Marcus Hosteen was very active within the Delta Iota Chapter, attending virtually every event the Delta Iota Chapter held. In spring 2013, he won the first ever Paideia Award which is given to a brother who best demonstration Leadership skills and outstanding commitment to Service. On March 9, 2014 Marcus assumed the Presidency following the resignation of the previous President.

Marcus Hosteen severed a number of leadership positions as an undergraduate which included the following:

  • Treasurer (2012-2013)
  • Leadership and Service Chair (2012-2013)
  • Alumni Relations Chair (2012-2014)
  • Fundraising Projects Chair (2012)

Marcus Hosteen has been instrumental in updating the Delta Iota Chapter’s wiki page and reconstruction the Family Trees of the Delta Iota Chapter. Marcus has enjoyed his time with the Delta Iota Chapter with some of his favorite events being the semester Brothers in Bonding (BIB) Retreat and participation in Community Service events such as Relay for Life and Dress A Child.

Aside from his involvement in Phi Sigma Pi, Marcus has been active in other Student Organizations at New Mexico State University which include the following:

  • Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society – Marcus has served as Chapter President (2012-2013) and Chapter Treasurer (2012)
  • Gamma Beta Phi Society – Marcus has served as the Chapter Treasurer (2012-Present)
  • Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization – Marcus has served as the Vice President of Community Service (2011) and Chapter Treasurer (2012-2013)
  • National Society of Collegiate Scholars – Marcus has served as the Vice President of Community Service (2012) and Chapter Treasurer (2013)
  • Native American Business Student Association – Marcus has served as the Vice President (2012)
  • United Native American Organization – Marcus has served as the Vice President (2012)
  • Business Council – Marcus has served as the Social Activities Coordinator (2011-2012)
  • Arts and Science Council – Marcus has served as a delegate representing Phi Eta Sigma (2011-2012), Gamma Beta Phi (2012) and Phi Sigma Phi (2013-present)

National Involvement

Marcus attended the following WICKED Regional Conference:

  • WICKED 2012 - Held in Phoenix, Arizona
  • WICKED 2014 - Held in Loveland, Colorado

Marcus will be attend the following National Convention:

  • 2013 National Convention - Held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Marcus was also the Grand Chapter Delegate representing the Delta Iota Chapter.
  • 2014 National Convention - Held in Atlanta, Georgia. Again Marcus will serve as the Grand Chapter Delegate for the Delta Iota Chapter.

Marcus' Grand Big is Amanda Villaseñor (Nu Class, Alumnus)

Marcus' Big is Travis D. Gee (Rho Class, Alumnus), Marcus was his third Little. When Travis graduated in May 2012 Megan Atencio (Rho Class, Alumnus) became his Second Big.

Marcus has two amazing siblings:

  • Marcus is full blooded Native American, he is Navajo and takes pride in his cultural heritage.
  • Marcus' favorite show is Days of our Lives, he started watching in 2000 with his grandmother. He is also a fan of General Hospital.
  • Marcus was elected Homecoming King in high school, he had been nominated twice before winning the title, and he was nominated for Prom King.
