Founders' Weekend

On January 31st, 1994, at The Ohio State University, one of the largest public universities in the U.S.A, the Beta Iota chapter of Phi Sigma Pi was founded. Distinguished to be the founding fathers of this new chapter at the time were 10 new brothers; Todd Lewis, Kari Larson, Michelle Martine, Bryan Deorsch, Gregor Homan, Nicole Miller, Kevin Temple, Christian Hailer, Candi Lukat and Lori Lafontaine. Since that day, the chapter celebrates the 31st of January by having a weekend dedicated to Phi Sigma Pi activities where brothers are indulged in Leadership, Scholarship and Fellowship related activities. This year marked the 13th anniversary of the Chapter. Being dedicated, as usual, further efforts were made in order to make it one of the best Founders’ Days to date. Planning began during the fall quarter in September. A location was found, date set; 27th January and invitations sent out to Inter-Chapter Brothers and Alumni. The social chairs made sure to remind everyone at every Chapter meeting about the big day approaching in order to get them roused and ready for it. The Friday before the day, Brothers arrived from out of town and started the weekend out by going to Dinner at Don Pablo’s with the Eta brothers from IUP who arrived first. After dinner, the brothers settled in where they were going to be staying for the weekend. Brothers then proceeded to get ready and go out and experience the Ohio State campus, at a local club, Panini’s. It was a great time, as being out in such an open space got Brothers interacting with each other especially the Inter-Chapter Brothers who had never been to Ohio State before. It also got brothers more comfortable with each other and hence kicked off the beginning of a great week-end.

The next morning, Brothers participated in community service in order to reflect Leadership because to become effective leaders, the ability to serve others must come first. Some Brothers went to the Ronald McDonald House, a non-profit organization that houses parents and families of kids who must sustain extended hospital stays. This supported the Scholarship leg of the Tripod because it helped Brothers to learn more about this wonderful organization and what they do, and the sorts of things they have done to really impact the families that they have served. While some Brothers were helping to clean the Ronald McDonald house, others baked and decorated a plethora of cookies which were taken to the House later during the week.

The formal banquet, which occurred that Saturday evening, took place at the OSU golf course banquet hall, comprised of Alumni, Inter-Chapter Brothers, Beta Iota Brothers, and their guests. Everyone in attendance was mixed together so as to keep up with the spirit of fellowship that was already supplanted earlier that weekend, By having Brothers talk they got to know more about our various Chapters, more about each other, and what Alumni have been doing since graduation. There was a slideshow, dinner, and dancing, which all involved a lot of interactivity between Brothers, which is the central point of the whole week-end, which many considered a huge success.

Hopes are high that next year’s festivities continue to surpass those of previous years, which is the continued goal in remembrance of the Chapter’s Founding.
