Joshua Simpson (born 20 May 1983) is a Collegiate Member and two-time Chapter Service Key recipient of the Epsilon Eta Chapter (EH 61) at Eastern Kentucky University.

Early Fraternity Life and Career

Joshua began his post-secondary career at Spencerian College in Lexington, Kentucky where he attained a Diploma of Computer Repair. He entered Eastern Kentucky University as a transfer in the fall 2003. After a series of personal traumas, Josh decided to leave the University. Over the next few years, he worked on recovery and refocusing his energy; and re-enrolled at Eastern with a conditional admittance in the fall of 2010. That semester he achieved a 4.0 GPA and continues to maintain strong academic success. In fall 2011, after receiving an email inviting him to learn more about Phi Sigma Pi, he decided to check it out and became more interested in being a part of the organization as the recruitment progressed. That semester he received a bid to become part of the Mu Initiate Class. Quickly, Joshua developed strong friendships with his fellow Initiates and with the Brothers of Phi Sigma Pi. After successfully completing the Initiation Program, he was inducted into the Chapter with the Mu Initiate Class on November 16, 2011.

Collegiate Years at EH Chapter

Joshua has been very active within the Chapter, attending as many of the Chapter’s events as possible. Even before being fully inducted into the Chapter, the Brothers saw a potential for leadership and elected him to serve as the Chapter’s second in command for the 2012 calendar year, in the role of Chapter Vice President. Joshua was also elected as the Technology Chair for the Spring 2012 semester, a position that he would hold until the end of the Fall 2012 semester. Motivated to excel in his new positions, Josh worked very hard to keep the Chapter informed of events and opportunities. He also worked to re-establish the Executive Council and encouraged inter-committee collaboration. Josh also began a summer-long undertaking to rewrite the Chapter Bylaws with the input and collaboration of previous Chapter leaders, and Alumni.

At the close of the Spring 2012 semester, Joshua was elected as an Initiate Co-Adviser with the assistance of Daryl Traylor for the upcoming Fall 2012 semester. At this time, he was also elected as the new Inter-Chapter Relations Chair for the 2012 - 2013 academic year. The Fall 2012 semester brought with it some difficulty, as Josh began a full-time cooperative education placement, as part of his degree requirements. Between working full-time for his co-op and being enrolled as a full-time student with four night classes, Joshua showed great dedication to the Epsilon Eta Chapter. Despite meeting qualifications for National Inactivity, he chose to remain active and to carry out and exceed the expectations of his numerous positions. He conducted and led weekly meetings with the Xi Initiate Class, as well as attending Chapter Business meetings, Executive Board meetings, and meeting his attendance requirements – a feat that many were unable to accomplish. The Xi Class inducted 5 Members to Active Brotherhood, only losing one Initiate during the program for unrelated circumstances.

In preparation for the start of the 2013 Spring semester, the Chapter held its elections for the 2013 Executive Board. At this time, Joshua was elected to the position of Chapter President for the 2013 calendar year. In this role, he has worked to provide a consistent approach to Chapter dealings, and has worked very hard to ensure the Epsilon Eta Chapter has the materials and support it needs. It has also been a learning experience that Josh has embraced, as he tries to continuously encourage the Brothers to discover the potential within them to succeed. During the Spring 2013 semester, Joshua also served as the Risk Management Chair, and continued in his position as the Inter-Chapter Relations Chair and Leadership Chair for the 2013 Bluegrass Regional Planning Committee. On April 27, 2013, at the Chapter’s Annual Founder’s Day Awards Banquet, Joshua was awarded a Chapter Service Key, becoming the sixth Epsilon Eta Brother to receive the honor.

As the Fall 2013 semester approaches, Joshua is working to organize himself for his second semester as Chapter President. He is also preparing himself to embrace his newest roles as Leadership (Service) Chair and Alumni Relations Chair.

Alumni Years to Present

Joshua will be graduating from Eastern Kentucky University with dual Bachelor of Business Administration degrees in Accounting with a concentration in Public Accounting and Computer Information Systems with a concentration in Network Management on May 9, 2015. At that time, he hopes to be able to remain very much involved with the Epsilon Eta Chapter, as well as the National Alumni Association. Josh also has hopes of one day establishing a new Alumni Chapter, as he envisions it to be called either the Central Kentucky Alumni Chapter (CKAC) or simply Bluegrass Alumni Chapter (BAC). Although Josh is accustom to things not always going “according to plan”, it is evident that he has a strong desire to remain active within the Fraternity after graduation.

Inter-Chapter Involvement

Joshua has had the opportunity to attend three Bluegrass Regional Conferences since his induction.

2012 Bluegrass Regional Conference

To have the opportunity to meet and get to know Brothers from other Chapters was an unforgettable opportunity.

Keynote Speaker: Christopher McCoy Other EH Brothers: Kesha Lane, Carole Kreider, Sharon Ramsey, Brittany Boyd, Hanna Mullins, Travis Simpson, and Stanton Tackett Comments & Reaction: Joshua had a more hands on experience with the 2013 BGRC, as he served as the Leadership Chair on the Regional Conference Planning committee. During this role, Josh worked to create an event that would benefit our National Philanthropy, Teach for America, as well as fit into the theme of the conference. With the help of fellow attendees Sharon Ramsey, Brittany Boyd, and Travis Simpson who dressed as zombies and roamed the hall and foyer, the “Save the Brains” School Supply Drive was born! In addition to the events of the conference itself, the weekend proved to be a great bonding experience for the Brothers of the Epsilon Eta Chapter.

2014 Bluegrass Regional Conference

Host Chapter: Epsilon Xi at East Tennessee State University Location: Johnson City, Tennessee Dates: March 28, 2014 - March 30, 2014 Theme: Putting on the Ritz Keynote Speaker: David Serafini Other EH Brothers: Comments & Reaction: Joshua was able to take on roles that were better suited in planning for the 2014 BGRC. Josh again served as the Leadership Chair on the Regional Conference Planning Committee, but this year the Leadership Chair was responsible for the Leadership in Action modules; the service event was planned by the Service Chair. He was also able to design and organize the registration packet and manage the registration process as the Registration Coordinator for the conference. The two positions provided Josh with a pleasant experience during this planning process.
