Leadership in Action is a leadership training and certification program tailored to Brothers of Phi Sigma Pi. Its mission is to empower Brothers with the leadership skills they need to inspire a positive change in all facets of our fraternity and our communities. The program was created and is maintained by National Staff, was approved by the National Council at their Fall 2009 meeting, and is supported by the Phi Sigma Pi Foundation. In September 2012 Leadership in Action was awarded the Outstanding Professional Program Award at the Professional Fraternity Association Conference.

Overview

Leadership in Action Award.jpg

Leadership in Action consists of interactive modules at various levels (nationally, regionally, and locally). A module is a flexible course structure which allows for a variety of teaching methods and accommodates a variety of learning styles. Rather than a traditional lecture-style class, modules incorporate discussion, activities, cohort groups, and other interactive learning experiences. Participants need 75 points to complete the certification program.

Modules

The following modules have been adapted for use on the national level:

  • The Great Balancing Act: Achieving Life Balance, 2010
  • Conflict Management, 2010
  • Communication Skills for Emerging Leaders, 2011
  • Juggling Multiple Priorities, 2011

Modules are divided into five key categories, and participants are encouraged to choose modules from a variety of areas to attain a diverse base of training.

  • Commitment to uphold our ideals
  • Scholarship
  • Awareness
  • Leadership Through Service
  • Fellowship

Certification

A participant may become certified in Leadership in Action by attaining 75 points. Different types of modules are worth different amounts of points:

  • National Modules (10 Points) These modules will be held at National Convention. They will be lead by National Staff.
  • Regional Modules (8 Points) These modules will be held at Regional Conferences. They will be lead by National Staff. In time, they will be led by Certified Regional Facilitators.
  • Local Modules (6 Points) These modules will be held locally at the Chapter level (collegiate or Alumni). They will be led by local facilitators who have participated in a training course and received certification to instruct prior to facilitating local modules.
  • Facilitate a Local Modules (2 Points) These points are to recognize the efforts of local leaders who facilitate our local modules. Local facilitators will need to participate in a training course and receive certification to instruct prior to facilitating local modules.
  • Leadership Development (1 Point per Course — up to 4 Total) You can receive points for courses that you've taken outside of Phi Sigma Pi. These include any leadership or professional development courses.
  • Leadership Position (1 Point per Position — Up to 4 Total) You can receive points for being a leader within the past five years and upon entering college either within Phi Sigma Pi or outside of Phi Sigma Pi. This includes, but is not limited to, a leadership position, coaching position, project coordinator, and so on.
  • Podcast to a Better You (1 Point per Session — up to 4 Total) These micro sessions can be done quickly and on the go, thus allowing you the luxury of completing them on your own time. To receive points, you’ll need to listen to recommended podcasts and make a minimum number of contributions on relevant forum boards.

† Indicates a member 2 or more years consecutively since certification.

Benefits

In addition to adding valuable skills to their own skill-sets, participants will receive the following for becoming certified:

  • Leadership Certificate
  • LiA Pin
  • National Recognition
    • Acknowledgement in printed publications
    • Listing on the website's certification page
    • Special recognition during national events

Note: We pride ourselves as a Brotherhood in not being a resume builder, but the simple truth is that you should get recognition for your work by being able to list your accomplishments within the Fraternity. Obtaining a certification through our Leadership in Action program may not give you an additional suffix, but it does give you an edge on managing your success and others. Now that's something to be proud of. Here is our recommendation for how to post this accomplishment on your resume. Under special skills list "Certified in leadership through Phi Sigma Pi's Leadership in Action program" then list the modules you completed.

Support

The Leadership in Action program is supported by the Phi Sigma Pi Foundation. The Foundation seeks Ambassadors to champion individual modules and raise the money to fund them. A module costs $3,500 to produce. Champions raise money by holding alumni dinners and otherwise reaching out to Phi Sigma Pi alumni Brothers from their undergraduate chapter and in their local community.
