Initiate Classes
Main Article: List of Beta Sigma Chapter Initiate Classes
Beta Sigma takes two Initiate Classes each year, which are generally composed of 12 – 22 members, one in the fall and one in the spring. The initiation process is six to seven weeks long, depending on the academic calendar.
The process is intense, but rewarding and creates strong brothers.
Initiates are required to do dialogues with 20 brothers, at least one alumni, and members of their initiate class to create a strong bond of fellowship. We have recently added an interchapter dialogue with willing brothers from other chapters in the area. They attend Sunday night business meetings and Thursday night events (which are centered around the three legs of the tripod and put on by our different committees, E-board, and Risk Management).
The initiates also develop and implement four initiate events as a rush class; These events are centered around the tripod: Scholarship, Leadership and Fellowship. They put on a service event, a scholastic event and a social event. The Alpha Zeta Rush class conducted a canned food drive for their service event, went to one of the many gardens on campus and had a tour of the greenhouse for their scholastic event, and put on a reality tv show competition for brothers for their social event.
We are looking forward to inducting the Alpha Kappa Class Spring 2012.
The Colin Dolehanty Tripod Scholarship
This award is named for a Beta Sigma Chapter Charter Member, Colin Dolehanty, who selflessly dedicated his life to the advancement of the Beta Sigma Chapter and the opportunities it affords the men and women of Michigan State University. He was also a man who demonstrated the ideals of the Fraternity: scholarship, leadership, and fellowship. After his untimely death, Colin's parents decided to give back to the organization for which he loved and cared. Each year at the Beta Sigma Founder's Day Banquet, the Dolehantys award this scholarship to the Chapter Brother who best exhibits the ideals of scholarship, leadership, and fellowship.
The winner of the Colin Dolehanty Tripod Scholarship in 2012 was Kailey Shelton
Chapter Events & Activities
Founder's Day
The Beta Sigma Chapter celebrates its founding typically on the weekend closest to March 19 each year. The event is commemorated with a banquet dinner and awards ceremony where the Beta Sigma Service Key Award is presented as well as the The Colin Dolehanty Tripod Scholarship.
Pi Mile 5K Run/Walk
The annual Pi Mile 5K Run/Walk is held every fall semester. The Brothers of Beta Sigma plan, organize, and execute the race which runs through MSU's campus with the proceeds benefiting a worthy cause. The 10th Annual Pi Mile raised over $6,000 for APAIDSCON, an organization dedicated to eradicating HIV/AIDS in India. The previous year, the 9th Annual Pi Mile raised over $5,000 for Teach For America and was endorsed by the Michigan Surgeon General and the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health. The event also won Outstanding Service Project Award at the 2007 National Convention.
Teeter-Totter-A-Thon
The Teeter-Totter-A-Thon takes place every spring semester. A teeter-totter is placed in the middle of the Auditorium Field on MSU's campus on which Brothers must ensure two people are teeter-tottering for 24 straight hours. Through business sponsorships, donations, and, in 2007, a children's carnival, Teeter-Totter-A-Thon raises money for a local charity. The 11th Annual event in 2007 raised $2,000 for the Help A Willing Kid foundation based out of Lansing, Michigan.
Broomball
Beta Sigma began a new event to be held toward the beginning of every spring semester. A Broomball tournament is held at Munn Ice Arena on a Saturday. The Brothers of Beta Sigma use this event to raise money for a worthy cause. Broomball is a game played on ice wearing street shoes. Players hit a ball around on the ice using a stick known as a broom. Beta Sigma is hoping to make this an inter-chapter event in the upcoming years and see it grow.
