Chapter History

Founding

The Alpha Upsilon Chapter was founded on February 12, 1992. It is unknown which member or members founded the chapter, but the Alpha class had 93 members inducted between February 12 and April 22.

Early Years

Unfortunately, the chapter does not have much information about its early years. There is no known record of history until Katie McLean created the Chapter History in 2003. What is known of the earlier years has been passed down through stories older brothers have shared with newer brothers.

Since Alpha Upsilon's founding, there have been two mascots. Originally, the chapter mascot was a cow. It is unknown when or why this selection was made, but eventually at another unknown point in time, the mascot was changed to the spider monkey, which it is still currently today.

Tim Bott was either the first president of Alpha Upsilon, the Alpha Class president, or both.

The chapter has had two faculty advisers since its founding: Dr. Timothy Bergen, Jr. and Mrs. Mary Ellen O'Leary, who still currently serves as the faculty advisor (since September 26, 1995).

The Active Chapter

The current chapter has 42 Active Members. The chapter is currently rebuilding its public relations on campus and has started to become a well known organization throughout the USC community. The Brothers of Alpha Upsilon are not only active in their Chapter, but many other organizations on campus. The activities range from honors societies such as Alpha Lambda Delta, to social sororities and fraternities like Gamma Phi Beta and Pi Kappa Alpha, as well as organizations like Carolina Productions and Campus Recreation.

Chapter Events & Activities

Founder's Weekend

Alpha Upsilon celebrates its founder's day weekend the 2ed February of each year. Most founder's weekends are celebrated within the chapter, and are not typical large ICR based events. This is due to that years ago, Alpha Upsilon lost a substantial amount of funds while attempting to host a large founder's weekend, which then took years to recover from. In 2009, Alpha Upsilon hosted the Southeast Regional Conference, in doing so, they decided not to celebrate their founder's day.

Phi Sigma Pi, "Pi" Mile 5k

Alpha Upsilon hosts a 5k Run/Walk in order to raise money in support for Teach For America. While this event is only a few years old, it is increasing in size every year, with this past year almost doubling the participants of the previous year. This event has been previously held around early April, but with future intent on hosting it around March 14, Pi Day. Six trophies are handed out to the first three men and women to finish. Participants can also enter as groups, which encourage support and can persuade others to join them. The largest group to enter receives a plaque.

Brothers of Alpha Upsilon collect can tabs in support of the Ronald McDonald House Charities. The Ronald McDonald House programs offer rooms for families of pediatric patients under 21 years old.1 Brothers often engage in friendly competition over the number of can tabs they can collect during their years of undergraduate studies. Collection of can tabs also counts toward the Big/Little Cup.
